Geographical indications, including appellations of origin
As I.R. Iran is a party to the “Paris Convention”, subject matters enumerated in its Article 1.2, including geographical indications, can be protected in the country. As to I.R. Iran’s domestic legislation, the “Act on the Protection of Geographical Indications” was ratified in 2005 which is fully in compliance with TRIPS Agreement. According to Article 1 of the Act, geographical indication is an indication which identifies a good as originating in the territory, a region or a locality of I.R. Iran, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin. Here, good includes any natural and agricultural products, handicrafts or manufactures. Under Article 3.1, a geographical indication having the above mentioned characteristics, whether registered or not, shall be protected.
